Quilted Water Bottle Tote

My mom carries, like, five bags with her at all times.  One of them carries two water bottles.  This is the bag that she used to carry her water bottles.  She asked me to make a tote about the same size.

So I took some pictures and some measurements.  See her water bottles?

This is what I came up with.

I started by making a template (see right side of picture) on graph paper and then I cut all the squares (2.5″ x 2.5″) and arranged them as I had written on my template.

After I sewed all the squares together, I sewed the strips together. (sorry for the blurry photo)

I used Alison Glass’s Handcrafted Indigo line to make the outside.  The inner print is a cute Cotton & Steel print called “Tea Stained Dots in Blue”.  The stains look weird but a good weird, at least I think.  =)

I feel like the stains add some dimension and depth to the print.  I put in two slip pockets so that she could put her phone, or anything else, in there without having it get wet from the bottles.

The front side.  I used the blocks to make a small message.  Can you see what the message is?  It’s kind of hard to see but if you know my mom you should be able to figure out what it says.

She had told me that she really likes the quilted look so when she asked me to make this tote for her I knew exactly what I was going to do.  She also likes the color blue, if you couldn’t tell.  Haha!
