Huge Quilted Tote aka Pinspiration – numero sesenta y uno

I saw this tote on Pinterest shortly after I started sewing.  I think the colors drew me in.  I loved how the orange, yellow, teal, and pink pop against the white and grey.  I knew I wanted to make it but was a bit intimidated as it is quilted and such.

A friend’s birthday was coming up and she is studying to be a teacher.  I thought this would be perfect for her.  I didn’t realize exactly how LARGE this tote was going to be but once I got the measurements to make sense in my head I thought, yup, this is perfect for an elementary school teacher.  Here is the finished front and back.

I first started by cutting 2.5″ strips by WOF and from there cut the strips into 2.5″ squares.  Then I followed Andy’s design for the pieced portion.  This was side A, laid out for sewing.

After I pieced and ironed the sides, I ironed on some interfacing and quilted it along the squares.  This is side A.

The straps were pretty easy to make too.

On the inside, there are four slip pockets and a magnetic snap closure.  I just LOVE the color yellow and thought it would make the inside easy to find things, especially since this tote is so large.  And also, doesn’t that purple just pop so naturally?

And just another shot for you to see them side by side.

This tote was pretty fun to make and it was my first pieced/quilted project.  I had tons of fun sewing it.  I can see how and why quilters are so addicted to quilting.
